The West Bengal School Service Commission Act, 1997 (West Bengal Act IV 1997) enacted by Notification No.936-L dated 1.4.1997 came into force with effect from 01.11.1997 for the purpose of recruitment of Assistant Teachers and Headmasters/Headmistresses in recognized Government aided and Sponsored Schools in West Bengal.


Functions:


It is mandated with the task of selecting (through a direct recruitment process) and recommending candidates for appointment in the post of Assistant Teachers, Headmasters/Headmistresses (HMs), various categories of non-teaching staff (Group-C & Group-D) in the government-aided schools in West Bengal. It also recommends candidates for appointment on compassionate grounds (in the non-teaching category only). Finally, it is also empowered to recommend existing HMs, Assistant Teachers and non-teaching staff for transfer (including Mutual Transfer). All the above functions have to be performed in accordance with existing WBCSSC/Government/NCTE rules and guidelines.
The Commission consists of a Central Commission by the name of the West Bengal Central School Service Commission (WBCSSC) and Six Regional Commissions by the name of the West Bengal Regional School Service Commission which act under the control and supervision of the Central Commission. The following are the Regional Commissions with their territorial jurisdiction:

Eastern Northern Southern Western South-Eastern Hill Region
Comprising the Districts of Birbhum, Purba Bardhaman, Pashchim Bardhaman and Hooghly with Headquarters at Purba Bardhaman. Comprising the Districts of Coochbehar, Alipurduar, Jalpaiguri,Uttar Dinajpur, Dakshin Dinajpur, Malda, Murshidabad and Siliguri Sub-Division within Darjeeling district with Headquarters at Malda. Comprising the Districts of Kolkata, Howrah and South 24-Parganas with Headquarters in Kolkata. Comprising the Districts of Jhargram, Purulia, Bankura, Purba Medinipur and Paschim Medinipur with Headquarters at Bankura. Region comprising the Districts of Nadia and North 24-Parganas with Headquarters at Barasat. Region comprising the Districts of Darjeeling district (excluding the Siliguri subdivision) and the entire Kalimpong district with Headquarters at Darjeeling.
